November Club News

Cancellations

A reminder on cancellations up to the end of the year. There are no club track sessions at all next week, Monday 6th, Wednesday 8th and Saturday 11th are all cancelled for the Track World Cup. After that we have cancellations for Saturdays November 18/25 and December 2. Wednesday December 27 is also cancelled.

Circuit sessions at Tameside

Instead of the track sessions Saturday riders can come to our road circuit sessions at the Tameside Cycle Circuit (OL7 9HG). These are running on Saturdays November 11/18 and December 2 from 11am to 1pm. They are aimed at riders who are new to circuit racing or with limited experience. You will have to bring your own road bike and wet weather gear is advisable – sessions can continue in wet weather. Please make sure your bike is roadworthy, there will be a bike check before each session. Cost is £5, no booking required.

Volunteers needed!!! We have club road coaches running the sessions but could do with some help running the sign on and collecting payments before the session. Please let me know if you can help with this.

Wednesday riders – there are opportunities for Youth A/B/Juniors at Tameside at the CCTs now running on Tuesdays, 7-9pm. There is a women and girls session every Thursday, 7-9pm. More info on BC events pages.

Club loan bikes

The club has a stock of track bikes which can be loaned to members. Subject to availability they can be loaned to riders who are attending Saturdays on a regular basis and are aiming at  entering track events. This would normally be a rider in Saturday Group 2/3. The NCC bikes (Dolans) cannot be used in open track racing.
The club committee would like members to be aware that bikes are not offered on permanent loan. The purpose of the loan period is to give parents the opportunity to see if children are going to take up track racing before they invest in their own bike. The committee feels that we should now have a fixed loan period of six months. Club membership is increasing all the time and we have no loan bikes available in some frame sizes.
This loan period will now be applied to all new bike loans. If you already have a bike on loan for over six months we’re not asking for it to be returned immediately but please look at replacing this with your own bike. If this is likely to be a problem then please let me know or speak to Rebecca or Nicola at the sign on desk.

Loan bikes are the responsibility of the person to whom the bike is loaned. This includes damage, necessary repairs or the loss of the bike. If a bike is taken home, it’s advisable to ensure that the bike is covered by your existing house or bike insurance.

Membership renewals

Membership renewals are coming up (unless you’ve joined after October 1st 2017). Please renew online if at all possible. You can do this through the club website link or (if you want to pay an extra £1 to BC) through the BC website. Please notify us if any of your details (contact information, medical issues etc.) have changed since your last subscription. If you want to renew at the sign on desk please give any changed details – you don’t need to fill out a new membership form.

Team managers

We have an increasing number of riders in road and circuit events and planning for 2018 is well under way. For events which look for team entries we’re hoping to have teams for Youth A and Junior girls and boys. To make this work well we will need more support on the day/weekend with organising riders/kit/bikes etc and we need women to support the girls teams. Please let me know if you’re interested and we’ll get people together before the new season starts.

Young volunteers

British Cycling’s Young Volunteers scheme is open to all 14-18 year olds and gives you the opportunity to get involved in different aspects of cycling, including coaching, events and club activities. BC run an introductory workshop, free membership is available and it can lead to a BC award. More details here.

Club Annual General Meeting

This will be on Saturday February 10 at 11.30am in the velodrome. All members welcome to attend, more details later.

Chimp Management workshop

Unfortunately the workshop scheduled for later this month has been postponed as Tim Buckle is not available. We’re looking to run it early in the new year, details later.

September Club News

Due to increasing attendance on Saturdays we are going to split the attendance times for Groups 1 and 2. Both groups will continue to run each week but Group 1 will run from 8 to 9.30am and Group 2 from 9.30 to 11am. Session cost for these groups will be £5. Group 3 will continue as previously, session cost £10.

Group 2 riders, please sign on from 9am and get ready for a 9.15 roller warm up and then onto the track for 9.30. For riders new to rollers, the warm up will be run by a coach.

Saturday track cancellations and circuit sessions

Due to other events at the velodrome there will be no club sessions on Saturdays November 11/18/25 and December 2. We will be running road sessions instead at the Tameside cycle circuit. This is a closed (traffic free) tarmac circuit in Ashton under Lyne (OL7 9HG). The sessions are aimed at Saturday riders and for those new to circuits there will be a beginners group. You will need to bring a suitable road bike and there will be a bike check before the session. Bring a waterproof top, sessions continue when it rains!

To help plan the sessions it would be useful if you could let me know if you are likely to attend and any preferences for dates – November 11/18/25/December 2, 11am – 1pm, £5. Dates will be confirmed next month.

Wednesday session programme

Wednesdays will now be SQT and Derny sessions on alternate weeks, starting with SQT on October 4.

Winter track events

Icebreaker series at Newport Velodrome (27/1, 24/2, 24/3) – entries open Sunday October 1st at 10am

Youth A omniums at Derby Velodrome, Saturday February 17, running alongside National Track Omnium Championship.

Manchester Regional Track League – starts on October 6, first five weeks are fully booked, entries for the remaining weeks open October 9. You must be 14+ and registered with the league to enter.

Entries for these are on the BC website.

Chimp management workshop

Tim Buckle (former GB coach and squad member) will be running a chimp management workshop for us on Thursday 16th November, 7-9pm at the velodrome (BMX meeting rooms). Chimp management is a powerful mind management model that was developed by Dr Steve Peters and has helped support the success of the GB Olympic squad and in many other sports. The workshop aim is to help riders to get the best out of themselves.

Tim now works for Chimp Management Ltd and is giving his time free to raise funds for#rideforcharlie. This is a memorial fund, set up by the parents of the late Charlie Craig. Charlie was a very successful young cyclist who died in his sleep earlier this year and the fund aims to provide support to young off road cyclists who want to succeed in cycling as Charlie did. There will be a collection at the workshop and all contributions will go to #rideforcharlie

Club bike register

We’re looking for volunteers to update our club bike register. We have a stock of track bikes which we loan to members so they can start racing before they get their own track bike. Updating the register will involve taking a photo and recording frame numbers and can be done at Saturday and Wednesday sessions. Please let me know if you are able to help and which session you could do.
