Restart of Activities – Velodrome

After a good first session back at the Tameside Circuit on Easter monday we can now confirm that we will be restarting our Velodrome Sessions for Advanced riders on Wednesday 14th April and for our New Riders and Intermediate riders on Saturday 17th April.  If you had outstanding bookings for cancelled sessions in January these have been transferred to April and you will have received an email confirming the new dates. If these dates are not convenient for you please let us know and we will try to sort out alternatives.

Please note that there will be NO SESSION on Saturday 24th April and Saturday 22 May as GB Cycling Team need the velodrome for their Olympic preparations.

The online booking system is now available to book all sessions as it was prior to lockdown.

If you are coming back to track sessions please remember that we need to continue to operate within Government a BC Covid guidelines. In particular please remember:-

  • Social distancing rules still apply when not actually on the track. You need to wear a face covering when moving around the velodrome and when seated within the rider area between track efforts.
  • Spectating is not currently permitted – if parents need to stay on site for safety reasons please stay in the marked area in the stands and keep you distance from other parents. Fice coverings need to be worn in the stands and only one parent per rider is permitted.
  • As previously riders need to be fully self sufficient and not rely on parents or other riders to borrow equipment. Please ensure that you have all you need including food and drinks in your track bag. Changing facilities will not be available at our sessions so please arrive ready to ride and have joggers/sweatshirts etc for putting on over skinsuits for travelling.
  • Please check your bike before you come to the track especially if it has not been used during lockdown.  Tyres not damaged and pumped up. Chain and pedals moving freely, saddle height might need to be adjusted especially as you may have grown taller during the last three months.Coaches will be available to advise if you have a mechanical issue.

If you have any concerns regarding our return to the track please get in touch.

Tameside Circuit and Zoom

Tameside circuit sessions will continue through the year on a fortnightly basis starting on Sunday 11th April then Sunday 25th April. Zoom sessions will continue on Tuesdays and Thursdays until our full face to face programme is fully established. 7:00pm -7:30pm for a short sharp effort on rollers or turbo.   https://us02web.zoom.us/j/89828948696?pwd=ZWNrb2tXT01EaXNGMjc2UnUxQ3B2UT09

Training and Racing opportunities

As Covid restrictions start to relax there are lots of opportunities to get involved with racing and training alongside our club sessions. Please remember that, whilst there are lots of things on offer you need to plan your training and racing so you are not doing too much. Please speak to  one of the coaches (contact by email link below) if you want to discuss your plans and what you should be doing.  Some activities we are aware of include:

Track Development Centres – these run on Tuesday nights 7:40-10:00 for Youth A & B riders. Currently there will be two groups of 15 riders one focussing on Sprint and one on Endurance. Please read the information on the BC Booking page to make sure that these events are suitable for you before booking. Club News October 2020

We hope you are all keeping well in these difficult times.

First we would like to share an update on club sessions and the latest Government and British Cycling guidance around Covid-19 as Greater Manchester, Liverpool, Lancashire and South Yorkshire move into the Governments Very High Risk, Tier 3 category.  Whilst this places significant restrictions on meeting others and travelling, Youth Sport is largely exempt from the Tier 3 restrictions at the moment. You can still travel to and take part in organised Youth Sports (Under 18 years) events and training sessions both indoors and outdoors. This means that our Velodrome and Tameside sessions can continue to go ahead at present.  We still need to be vigilant and stay safe by following the instructions in the Rider Briefings and all other government guidance.

Velodrome Sessions – we are currently running a Beginners session for those new to track cycling or are thinking about joining the club. 8:00am – 9:00am on a Saturday morning.  Places limited to 12 riders and on achieving an appropriate standard of riding participants are invited to join the club and progress to our intermediate sessions.  Bookings are via the link on the club website (link below).

We also run intermediate sessions on a Saturday morning 9:00am – 12:00am and Advanced sessions on Wednesday 6:00pm – 8:00pm. These are for full (first claim) members of the club. Progression to the Advanced sessions is by invitation of the coaches. Bookings via the Online Booking System (OBS) link below.

Zoom Sessions – we are continuing to run a 30 minute short sharp interval session via Zoom at 7:00pm on Thursday evenings. Suitable for Rollers or Turbos. Remember to warm up beforehand and expect a good hard training block (but it only as hard as you want it to be). Use the usual zoom link:

https://us02web.zoom.us/j/89828948696?pwd=ZWNrb2tXT01EaXNGMjc2UnUxQ3B2UT09

Tameside Circuit Sessions – we will continue to run outdoor circuit training sessions once a fortnight on Sundays 11:00am – 1:00pm. These provide a chance to work on circuit racing skills as well as getting a good endurance workout. Sessions booked via OBS link below.

Other Training opportunities – BC Development Centres are open to Youth B and A riders andprovide a good endurance workout with riders from a mix of local clubs. Our local session is at Tameside Circuit on Tuesday evenings, there are also Development Centres at Doncaster on Wednesdays, Lancaster and Leeds on Thursdays.  Bookings are via the BC event Pages (search for Development Centre).

Membership Renewal Time –  Club membership  renewals are open for 2021 from the 31 October.  This year are asking you to renew your membership via the British Cycling website. Membership expires on 31 December 2020 and anyone who has not renewed their membership by 15 January 2021 will be assumed to have left the club and will no longer be able to ride our sessions in 2021.  Please go to www.britishcycling.org.uk and log into your profile using your BC membership number and password. Once logged in you need to :

  1. Click on My Dashboard in the top right of the screen
  2. On the left of the screen click on About Me then select Clubs and Teams
  3. Make sure that either Eastlands Velo or Sportcity Velo is selected as your primary Club then click on Club Profile  and select Buy Club Membership at the bottom of the page.
  4. Select the appropriate membership level and complete the transaction.

You will receive a confirmation email once the membership has been approved usually within 48 hours and your membership card will be available to collect when you register at the next Velodrome session you attend.

Membership fees remain as last year:-

Youth  8-15 years £20,    Junior 16 and 17 years £25,   Adult 18–120 years  £30, Family £50

All memberships will be subject to a £1 booking fee levied by British Cycling. New members who have joined the club since 1 October will have their membership extended to the end of 2021 and do not need to do anything. If you have any problems renewing your membership please ask at a session or contact us by email (link below).

First Claim Membership – Eastlands Velo has a policy of requiring full club members who wish to ride our sessions to be “First Claim” members. This means that Eastlands Velo or Sportcity Velo must be selected as the riders Primary Club on their British Cycling members profile.  We expect riders to represent the Club when racing and to wear club kit with pride when racing and training. If you wish to represent any other club or team for a specific event or discipline we ask that you let us know so that we can all avoid any problems with race licence registrations etc.

As a club we believe that we should all be proud to be a part of Eastlands and Sportcity and continue to show our commitment to the  great history of the club in supporting and developing young people in their cycling careers. We also believe that proudly wearing your kit and identifying with your club shows off that pride and respect for your fellow members and the officials and coaches of the club who provide a huge amount of their volunteer time so that you can train and race.

The club continues to be affiliated to Cycling Time Trials, the Manchester and District Time Trial Association  and The British Schools Cycling Association so you can also represent Eastlands and Sportcity when taking part in Time Trials and Hill Climbs and also BSCA events.

Online Booking System – we have been using the Bookwhen.com system now for a couple of months and we are very pleased with the way that it is working for the club. There are a few tips which will help you and the club officials to make best use of the system.

  • The main members page has details of all events open to members of the club.  Beginners sessions are booked via a separate link from the club website.
  • There will always be two or three dates available for each type of event. Please only book on one date for the level or event you are riding. Once you have ridden the session you can book on the next session. This ensures that there are always other sessions which riders can book on even though their first choice is booked up.
  • If you cannot attend a session due to self isolation for example, you can transfer your booking to a later date by logging into the session using the reference in the confirmation email you would have received. Please, if possible transfer your booking rather than cancelling as any refunds which may be due are not processed automatically and incur additional costs for the club.
  • If the session you want to attend is full please use the Waiting list function (at the top of the info box on the right of the page). This helps us assess demand for sessions and, if a place becomes available you get the chance to book on.
  • If a session is full with a waiting list and a place becomes available the first rider on the waiting list will receive an email to tell them. They have one hour to complete the booking and make payment. After one hour the next on the waiting list is contacted and whoever books on first gets the place.
  • Please make sure you read the Briefing notes for each session so that you know what is expected of you when you attend.

Congratulations…to former club member Charlotte Robinson who has secured a place with the British Cycling Senior Academy recently and our Chairman, Matt Rotherham, who continues to be part of the Para Cycling Podium Programme along with ormer members Jason Kenny, Matt Walls and Simon and Adam Yates who all are part of the Great Britain Cycling Team squad.

And Finally…… We know that several members have had to self-isolate over the last couple of weeks due to exposure to Covid and we understand how hard this can be. Thank you for doing your bit to protect everyone and remember that you can still train at home on Rollers/Turbos as well as joining in on our Zoom session each week.  If anyone wants to talk to one of the coaches about what to do or how to stay motivated please drip us an email and we will get back to you.

Its also time when some of out members are looking to move on to different clubs and teams as they move into Juniors. You can of course stay with Sportcity if you want to but if you are moving on please let us know and keep in touch. We love to hear about what our former riders are up to.

Till next time…..

COVID-19 Update October 16th 2020

As you are all probably aware ACT Track League has now also been suspended along with MRTL. However after consultation with the NCC and following the latest guidance from both British Cycling and the UK Government we are able to run our sessions as we have been following the current social distancing rules. This owes mainly the the fact none of our riders are over the age of 18 so fall under the Youth Sport category but bear in mind that this could change at any point so please look out for any updates via the Members Page and Club Emails. If you currently do not receive club emails please let us know so we can check your details and agreements and change any if necessary. Thanks for your support.

COVID-19 Coronavirus

After much deliberation and in line with British Cycling advice, we have made the reluctant decision to cancel all future club training sessions until further notice.  As the advice from Government is changing daily there is no definitive date for sessions to recommence although British Cycling expect it to be after the end of June at the earliest.

We hope you will all find a way to keep training in the short term and if any advice is needed, drop one of the coaches a message and we will try to help.

Keep checking the Facebook page and if anyone manages to set up any online rides, share it with your team mates who may want to join and keep it fun!!

In the meantime Eastland Velo and Sportcity Velo wishes all our riders and family members to stay safe, keep well and we will update you as and when we can.

January Club News

Happy New Year to all our club members.

With the new year in mind we have a couple of updates for you, which we wanted to communicate.

Club Session Payments
After discussion with some parents and suggestions that this may make things easier and more streamlined for some, we have decided to introduce a system for online payments for club sessions.

We are now able to accept payments via mobile banking so if you want to pay for session fees, membership, kit, etc online just show us the confirmation on your phone and we will match it to our bank.

For bank account details – see email version or ask at any Club session.

Annual Membership
As we approach the end of January all of our members should now have renewed their annual club subscription. Can we ask that for the month of February, that you bring your membership card to all club sessions. Any rider who does not have their membership card, may not be allowed to attend club sessions without one.
Also, from February 1st all club subscriptions will be increased by the value of £5. This will increase subscriptions as follows,

Family – £55
Adult (18+) – £35
Youth (Under 16)  – £25
Junior (16-17) – £30

Could any outstanding memberships be renewed by the end of the month to prevent you being subjected to any further costs.

Racing Success
As a track based club the National Track Championships always form a focus point for our club efforts. Over the past weekend it was the turn of our senior club members at the National Cycling Centre, here in Manchester. Over the weekend we were represented on the track in various events, and as in previous years we have achieved more success.

We would like to congratulate our new National Champions, Jess Crampton – Women’s Keirin (for the 2nd consecutive year !!) and Matthew Rotherham – Men’s Kilo. Matthew as pilot to Neil Fachie in the Tandem Kilo also managed to set another World Record this weekend. This time Anti Doping were present so this should be made official very shortly. The question is… “Can they get down to 58 seconds ??

Many other riders who competed across the Senior and Para events over the weekend, and we would like to congratulate everyone on their hard work and effort.
In other disciplines, action continues in Cyclocross with many of the regional leagues now coming to close. In North Wales, Sam Stewart-Ball achieving 2nd place overall in the Under 12s. The North West CCA League is also coming to a conclusion, and we are expecting more success from our club members there. Congratulations goes out to Joe Watkins-Wilson who took his first win this weekend in Northwich.

We also have the road circuit race season, getting underway with the MAMIL series in Stourport, Worcestershire. The annual series of 4 races takes part in January/February and is often a baptism of ice and snow for the intrepid competitors. Congratulations to anyone competing there !

Finally it was the opening round of the Icebreakers Track series in Newport, Wales this weekend. It saw some of our Youth A – C riders competing in the endurance based omnium series. The event comprises Scratch, Elimination and Points races and allows riders to blow out the winter cobwebs and se how their winter training is progressing. We had representation from Casper and Lola Ellis, Sam Stewart-Ball, Dan Jackson, Xavier Teece-Round and Evie Black. They all rode extremely hard and we would like to congratulate them all on their hard work.

Martyn Teece-Round
General Secretary
