September Club News

Due to increasing attendance on Saturdays we are going to split the attendance times for Groups 1 and 2. Both groups will continue to run each week but Group 1 will run from 8 to 9.30am and Group 2 from 9.30 to 11am. Session cost for these groups will be £5. Group 3 will continue as previously, session cost £10.

Group 2 riders, please sign on from 9am and get ready for a 9.15 roller warm up and then onto the track for 9.30. For riders new to rollers, the warm up will be run by a coach.

Saturday track cancellations and circuit sessions

Due to other events at the velodrome there will be no club sessions on Saturdays November 11/18/25 and December 2. We will be running road sessions instead at the Tameside cycle circuit. This is a closed (traffic free) tarmac circuit in Ashton under Lyne (OL7 9HG). The sessions are aimed at Saturday riders and for those new to circuits there will be a beginners group. You will need to bring a suitable road bike and there will be a bike check before the session. Bring a waterproof top, sessions continue when it rains!

To help plan the sessions it would be useful if you could let me know if you are likely to attend and any preferences for dates - November 11/18/25/December 2, 11am - 1pm, £5. Dates will be confirmed next month.

Wednesday session programme

Wednesdays will now be SQT and Derny sessions on alternate weeks, starting with SQT on October 4.

Winter track events

Youth A omniums at Derby Velodrome, Saturday February 17, running alongside National Track Omnium Championship.

Manchester Regional Track League - starts on October 6, first five weeks are fully booked, entries for the remaining weeks open October 9. You must be 14+ and registered with the league to enter.

Entries for these are on the BC website.

Chimp management workshop

Tim Buckle (former GB coach and squad member) will be running a chimp management workshop for us on Thursday 16th November, 7-9pm at the velodrome (BMX meeting rooms). Chimp management is a powerful mind management model that was developed by Dr Steve Peters and has helped support the success of the GB Olympic squad and in many other sports. The workshop aim is to help riders to get the best out of themselves.

Tim now works for Chimp Management Ltd and is giving his time free to raise funds for#rideforcharlie. This is a memorial fund, set up by the parents of the late Charlie Craig. Charlie was a very successful young cyclist who died in his sleep earlier this year and the fund aims to provide support to young off road cyclists who want to succeed in cycling as Charlie did. There will be a collection at the workshop and all contributions will go to #rideforcharlie

Club bike register

We're looking for volunteers to update our club bike register. We have a stock of track bikes which we loan to members so they can start racing before they get their own track bike. Updating the register will involve taking a photo and recording frame numbers and can be done at Saturday and Wednesday sessions. Please let me know if you are able to help and which session you could do.

Session prices

We have kept session prices down for some time but with track hire charges increasing we are going to have to put up our session prices from September 1st. Saturday and Wednesday sessions will now be £10 (Manchester residents £8).

Saturday sessions

Groups 1 and 2 can attend all Saturday sessions for the time being. Please note Saturday cancellations on September 16, November 11/18/25, December 2.

Go-Ride Holiday Coaching Camps

BC Go-Ride coaches are running track, circuit and MTB camps for riders in Youth A/B/C and Junior Girls age categories. Entries must be online and details are available here.

HSBC UK Go-Ride Holiday Coaching Camps offer training and education dedicated to specific levels of rider over a range of disciplines. Camps are available at two levels.

If your child is new to cycling or not a regular at a club or races then the beginner’s camps are for them. These offer the participant a chance to develop and become proficient at a range of core cycling and bike handling techniques that will prepare them for their first club session or race.

If your child has experience of racing and is a Go-Ride Club regular then there are advanced camps. There will be the chance to improve on the skills developed at their club as well as look at techniques across disciplines that will progress your child to the next level of their cycling journey.

Youth accreditation

Wednesday sessions are for riders who have completed their youth accreditation and the aim of the Wednesday sessions is to improve a rider's skills and fitness for competition. Riders completing their youth accreditation on Saturdays will not be moved up to our Wednesday session until they are seen to be taking part in competition such as track leagues and omniums.

Please be aware that accreditation is not necessarily permanent. In line with the NCC accreditation procedures, accreditation will be suspended if riders do not attend Wednesday sessions for a period of six months. In order to return to Wednesdays a rider will first need to attend Saturday sessions for reassessment. Accreditation can also be suspended for inappropriate riding or conduct.

NCC accreditation

Riders age 15 and over who have completed our youth accreditation can take part in NCC SQT sessions. In order to access SQTs all riders must first register with the NCC so they have a customer file. To enable riders to book SQTs we pass on details of riders completing our youth accreditation to the NCC, so please make sure you are registered with them before trying to book an SQT. Online NCC registration is available here.

York track training day

This is now on (weather permitting) and will run from 1-4pm on Sunday 10th April at York Velodrome, York Sport Village. It will focus on omnium events so bring your omnium kit and please use appropriate equipment and gearing. Club News for January 18th 2014

Club News 18th January 2014

  • There is no Saturday session on February 1st, due to the Revolution on that evening.  Group 1 & 2 riders who would normally attend this session, should come the week after.

  • Clubroom cupboards – if anyone would like a large metal or wooden cupboard, there are three spare (one metal, one wooden and one with a glass front) outside the bike store, they are around 4 feet wide and about 3ft 6inch high and free to whoever would like them.

  • Membership – a quick reminder that membership must be renewed as soon as possible unless already completed.  British Cycling membership will also need renewing from the beginning of the year, as racing licenses run to December 21st.  BC licenses will only be issued to paid-up club members.

  • The ACT track league will accept last year’s BC racing licenses until the end of January 2014.

  • Session Fees – these are now £8 for Saturdays and Wednesdays, with a discount of £2 for Manchester City Council Tax payers.  A valid club membership card is needed to sign on to each session; otherwise there is an extra £1 charge for the session.

  • Safety Checks – If riders are using their own or Club bikes, it is rider’s and parents’ responsibility to safety check the bikes before riding them.  Club Coaches will always provide advice or assist in bike checks. The main points to consider are as follows:
    • Tyres – condition and pressure
    • Wheels – damage, loose spokes wheelnuts or bearings,
    • Pedals – tightness and condition
    • Cleats – check for wear, damage and loose screws
    • Handlebars - security of clamps and presence of bar-end caps
    • Chainset and chain – tightness of chainring bolts and chain tension
